A 10 Minute presentation on the dementia rollercoaster journey Bob Partington was on over the last 10 years. His story was extreme and this presentation highlights the shortfalls in the acute care system and the power of the family perspective. This presentation was at ‘The Pavilion’ in the Adelaide Parklands to 80 doctors and medical clinicians.
Brett, your well prepared and heartfelt presentation has been very helpful for me. Thank you.
To anyone who may be interested, this is our story.
My partner was Diagnosed in February this year with Alzheimer’s caused by a combination of anaesthetic and opioids during and following a total knee replacement. Now 8 months later he is in a nursing home because he needs 24/7 care. He falls frequently. I, soon to be 81, am not capable of day and night care. He seems to be quite alert mentally. His memory is better than mine, but there have been
Episodes of harassment bordering on bullying, which has not been evident in the past. He wants to come home but I am terrified he will fall, crack his head on the concrete and tiled floor, and bleed to death. When he falls he drops like a felled tree – without warning. He needs help, Showering, shaving, etc, toileting- incontinence, dressing, walking, and eating (he has a Parkinson’s tremor in his right hand). His Spatial awareness is out of kilter. He says I have an irrational fear. I don’t agree.
